Millimetre-Wave Links

The Australian government has recently released part of the millimetre wave band (71GHz-76GHz) for fixed point-to-point data links; also called the called Extremely High Frequency (EHF) band.

This band is ideal for short range links requiring high data capacity:

The equipment uses highly directional antennas
link distances up to 1km (up to 2km in some Australian locations) are possible
very high bandwidth (1.25Gbps)
very low annual spectrum usage charges ($187 per year)

Spectrum Regulation

Very low spectrum charges have been set by the government: a significant advantage in high density areas such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The annual licence charge is only $187 per year for a 1.25GHz link!

Coordination within the bands has been simplified by the government; taking advantage of the highly directional transmissions. Thus, the spectrum is “self-coordinated”. AMlinks recommends using accredited spectrum engineers to coordinate these links. These engineers examine the proposed link location and look at the need to coordinate with any existing equipment in the vicinity
